I loaded two applications and later decided I did not want them, so deleted them. Now I regularly get updates offered on the deleted apps, and i don't know how to stop this.

Which device and what's the OS number in full?
If you are on 2876 it could be android runtime error and the fix is available in BBW....or if it's an errant account you may be helped by the Accounts Cleaner app in BBW.
