I'm very worried not being able to differentiate being responding to an individua and it's really going out to a group

I'm not sure what you mean, but with my 9700 when I receive a text message I can see the phone number/name of the person who sent it.

If it's been sent as part of a group, from memory I got the group name and phone number of the individual who sent the text.

Make sure that everyone in the group calls the group the same name.
