My wife has a BB Classic and the T-Mobile voice-and-text-only plan. Yet somehow she can send me messages using BBM even with wifi turned off! Anybody know how in the world this is happening?

A very good question that I don't know if anyone can answer other than T-Mobile. There has to be a data connection somewhere along the line. Whether it's intentional or not.
I'm the same person who started this thread, and I signed up as a member to provide an intriguing update on the situation. I accessed my T-Mobile online account and verified that the plan is talk and text only—no data. I cannot access the Internet with wifi turned off. However, with wifi off, I noticed that the Blackberry icon appears in the notification area. According to the user manual, this icon indicates that the phone is connected to the "BlackBerry Infrastructure." So that must mean that T-Mobile is somehow allowing a residual amount of data to allow access to the BB infrastructure.
Now I'm not sure what all this means, but I found some clues in this interesting thread:

Anyhow, the fact remains that my BB Classic can send BBM messages on a mobile plan without data!
Fascinating! So it's free BBM on T-Mobile's cheap $20/mo plan, while supplies last!
Same phenomenon reported here: https://communityforums.rogers.com/t.../126842/page/2
Its most likely a free add-on, because you would need some data to send pictures by text, so TMO probably connects your wife's phone to the BB service without letting her know about it.
This ^^^
All phones have access to data, even if they have no data plan.
Well yeah I get it, but it's not that simple. I use the same plan on my Android phone and can't use BBMe without wifi. :)
They may have her plan configured "old-style".
Your phone, an android could work on the talk and text plan without data, but her BlackBerry needs to connect to the BB server during activation.
