First off you need to have a BlackBerry account with your service provider. Then the setup is actually pretty easy, here's a page from blackberry that walks you through the process....

Setting up gmail on a BlackBerry 9720 is the same as setting up any other email account. Simply log into your carriers BIS page via the Web or using the on device email setup screen. Enter your Gmail address and password. The BIS service will do the rest. All settings are automatic.
