I have new Virgin Mobile 4G SIMs for my unlocked (from BB Shop) Z10 and Leap but do not seem able to select 4G, 3G&4G or 2G, 3G &4G in mobile network settings. All has been working as expected using the old 3G SIMS. If I select anything with 4G, the phone seems to revert to the lower "non-4G" setting.

I have spoken with Virgin and tested the SIM cards in an iPhone, where LTE can be selected. I have checked the Virgin 4G frequencies which are in bands showing in the about screen on the Z10 and Leap.

I don't have a 4G signal in my house but would expect to be able to set the phone to receive one when it finds one. Am I missing a trick?

    Thanks

    Gary

With the SIM in the Z10 or Leap, what are the available Network Technologies listed in the drop down?
What name is listed in the Available Networks?

What exact model number do you have for the Z10 and Leap?

Hi, thanks for your additional questions.

Sorry to be a bit dim but do you mean the "Network Mode" drop down? If so, it is 2G, 3G, 4G, 2G&3G, 3G&4G, 2G&3G&4G.

If you mean the available networks on a manual scan then it is currently UTMS,GSM where I am located at the moment.

Leap model number is STR100-1; Z10 is STL100-2

    Cheers

Here is a screen shot form my Z30 on Verizon for Network Technology in Settings/Network and Connections/Mobile Network:

Double check the models you have against those lists and then find out exactly what the SIM Virgin gave you operates on.

Great, thanks. Network Technology is Network Mode on both phones here (could be a country difference?). Frequencies of the SIM and on those two links match (800, 1800, 2600) and those are the Virgin frequencies here. SIMs are brand new this month when I signed up for the 4G service.

    All very odd...

Other than some sort of needed activation step we may be missing, then only thing I can think of is maybe the BlackBerry devices won't "know" they are 4G until they actually get onto a 4G tower?
When will you have a chance to get to a 4G location to test?

Thanks. Will try this, at the latest when I return to work as that is in central London, so one would hope/assume good 4G. Will report back in a week or so...
