I am often surprised when digits or punctuation appear when I want to type characters and vice versa. It is also often surprising when characters are uppercase rather than lowercase or vice versa.

The problem is that there is no indicator that I can see to show me whether alt or shift are currently active. At the beginning a line (but not of all lines) shift is active automatically. (I can disable that.) But when I press alt alt to remain in digit/punctuation mode, it sometimes resets (for example when moving to another textbox) and sometimes it does not (for example when moving to another textbox as well).

The solution would be an indicator. On the onscreen keyboard the indicator is that the buttons change (show a character uppercase or lowercase or a digit or a punctuaion mark). But how can I see an indicator without a virtual keyboard?

the word suggestions as you type also show if you have caps/shift on or not as they change to fit what you are about to type. Not alt though.

Look up in your status bar, it's there.

Negative. Some applications, like facebook, cover the upper part of the screen. Then the indicator is invisible. That must be why I thought I never saw it.
