Hello, I'm hoping the CrackBerry community can point me toward the most efficient way to achieve my urgent data transfer need: from Bold 9000 (4.6) to Classic (10.3.x).
I'm reasonably tech savvy, but have some increasing neurological issues which make reading and writing difficult.
Hence I am humbly requesting your informed guidance about procedure I should follow.
Due to circumstances, I am currently Mac-only, but can possibly get brief access to a Laptop running Windows 10.

1/ Current device and use
Current device:
- Bold 9000, AT&T
- v4.6.0.167
- no 3rd-party apps
- primary use is phone/SMS&MMS/Contacts; minor use of Calendar/MemoPad
- backed up regularly using BB Desktop Software for Mac ver 2.4.0 (files are .bbb format)
- no media card
- everything in device memory (no storage to SIM)
The phone has been in constant and reliable use for ~10 years (yay Bold 9000). A few trackball cleanings/surgeries, multiple batteries, but generally OK. However I suspect there appear to be a cascading set of issues concerning both power jack and power inverter circuitry, so it's time for data transfer then retirement. Emphasize that the phone is regularly backed up, but it is essential that I can transfer all data to new phone(s):
- Messages (SMS & MMS)
- Contacts (which contain extensive notes)
- Calendar data
- Call Logs
- MemoPad documents
- Saved Messages (if possible)
- Settings

2/ Some context about the situation
I am broke, essentially homeless, and somewhat unusually due to being exonerated from a wrongful conviction many years ago, have been involved in a long-running set of civil rights cases, for over a decade. One case is currently at the US Supreme Court. There is a huge amount of info that I need to be able to continue to access, to support the civil rights organizations involved.
Only for past few years, as my use of SMS/MMS increased, has the Messages setting been "Keep Forever" (ie they will always show in Messages display); before that they were saved in then-current backups, but had eventually rolled off from the active Messages display.
For reasons of forensic history, it could become important soon to be able to access old Messages. Unless there is some software which would allow me to "read" old backup .bbb files, ie extract old message history; the only way I can think to do this is to have an "extra" Bold 9000 which can be "restored" back to a given point in time using the appropriate .bbb file from my current Bold 9000.
I have been very wary of a glitch "bricking" my current 9000, so I have not upgraded beyond v4.6.0.167; and I really don't want to temp fate by trying.

3/ Procedure?
I was gifted a Classic, so that will be my new phone.
From what my aging brain has read, I believe that I can use only BB Desktop SW to perform backups of the v4.6 Bold 9000; and must use BB Link to transfer data directly from a Bold 9000 (v5 or higher) to a Classic (v10.3.x).
I don't want to risk bricking my current Bold 9000, so I do not want to have to upgrade it from (v4.6). Therefore I believe I must transfer my data from my current Bold 9000 (v4.6) to a Bold 9000 (v5), using BB Desktop SW?
Or maybe there is a way to skip that step, and somehow transfer the data directly from a BB Desktop SW backup .bbb file (to either a Bold 9000 (v5), or hopefully straight to a Classic (v10.3.x))?

4/ Available hardware
Based on what I understand for the transfer may therefore may need to be a multi-step process involving BB Desktop SW, BB Link, possibly multiple 9000 phones and two generations of 9000 SW (v4 and v5); and to hopefully be able to "clone" and have safety clones of Bold 9000 and Classic; I have managed to acquire several BBs in G/VG/LN condition, so these are the resources I have to work with:
1/ My current phone, the "source":
- Bold 9000 (v4.6.0.167) (Platform 4.0.0.217))
2/ Extra 9000s (if needed for transfer, and later as "safety clones"):
- Bold 9000 (v4.6.0.304 (Platform 4.0.0.247))
- Bold 9000 (v5.0.0.1067 (Bundle 1728, Platform 5.2.0.89))
3/ One of these will be my "new" phone, the other hopefully can be made a "safety clone":
- Classic SQC100-2 (v10.3.1.841) [ I think a NOS (new old stock) AT&T product ]
- Classic SQC100-2 (v10.3.3.1463) [ AT&T refurbished ]
4/ One non-activated SIM card each for Bold 9000 and Classic.

5/ Question(s)
So, my question(s), could those of you with experience advise what you think would be best sequence of actions:
Q1/ Data transfer, Bold 9000 to Classic:
Q1.0/ should I upgrade OS on Classic(s) before starting the data transfer project? Checking from each phone says I am running most-recent software... If yes, how best to upgrade to latest AT&T, and I think it can't be done on a Mac (or am I wrong, I hope)?
Q1.1/ how may I best transfer all data from my current Bold 9000 (4.6) to a Classic (10.3.x)?
Q1.2/ is there perhaps a way to use a backup .bbb file (made from my current Bold 9000 (v4.6)) as a source for the transfer?
-
Q2/ Making "safety clones" of Bold 9000 and Classic
Q2.1/ Is it possible to make a "safety clone" of my current Bold 9000 (v4.6) by using a backup .bbb file, made from that phone, to restore a different physical phone running either v4 or v5? (I believe this question also covers my need to know if I could "go back in time to look at old Messages" by restoring a different physical Bold 9000 from one of my current phone's .bbb backup files?)
Q2.2/ Analogously for the Classics, is it possible to make a "safety clone"? (I understand that I could possibly use BB Protect, but that involves cost of a second continuously-active cellular account; wondering if there is a way to make a clone "offline"?)

Thank you all so much for reading, I really appreciate your help.
