Back in year 2012 I had switched to other platform and left BBM for 2 years I think. When I get back last year and opened BBM, rejoined old groups. I did get the old chats from about 1-2 years ago.

They can decrypt in real time in those situations. The data on the BlackBerry servers, when using BBM, is stored until delivered then it's only on the device. This is why when you switch devices, your BBM conversations don't carry over, just the contacts.

Now, for clarity, they do have record of who the messages were sent to and when (I believe) just not the content.

Groups, yes... it seems to store that as they transfer, but individual, no.

Well, there is more to the groups than just text, so it makes sense to me.

You can save the pictures and videos anywhere you like. I was just saying that BlackBerry doesn't store the content sent via BBM.

My friend. What are you trying to hide?
If it's porn, your ISP won't care.
If you're wanting to do something illegal, DON'T

I think India is one of those "alleged" things.

I don't know if things being "on the server" is the right way to think about it. I think messages are send peer to peer from device to device but there is an ability to audit the communication if compelled by a company (KB34733-How to set up audit logging for BBM, Phone, PIN, SMS, and Video Chat in BlackBerry Enterprise Service version 10.1 and later) or by court order

AFAIK they can read past individual BBMs
How it's done, I'm not sure, but it's not as simple as just auditing
They did it down in S America against drug gangs.
I wonder whether they can retrieve BBM messages saved on the device through a backdoor

    No
Which is why you need more than one person active and online in order to restore the group after switching devices.
If you were the only person in the group it won't restore.
Pretty sure groups works like a torrent

Well rosqh, now it sort of gets down to which country you are in. A few year ago Saudi and India threatened to shut BBerry down if they didn't allow them to eavesdrop on people's "interactions." Not sure how that tuned out. Theoretically, in the United States, for anyone to obtain personal data they need permission (a warrant) from a court to do so. In most other countries, they can just take it. Of course, the US is fast becoming like... most other countries. If the material is politically sensitive, I would be careful if you live in a country w/o freedom of speech.
