It would not shut off until the battery died. Still wouldn't turn on. If I try to charge it there is a low 60 cycle hum coming from the speaker. I put it in rice for a couple of days. Should I try again to charge the battery? Is there some repair outfit that can fix it. I have lost all my photos and addresses and passwords. I know I should have backed it up but I didn't.

Oops! that is sad, what i can suggest is remove phone cases or covers, if any, since they can trap in moisture. Take out the SIM card and the Battery also if you are confident ‘DIY-type’ user, and place it on a paper towel to dry it off; wipe the phone with a dry cloth, then put the device in a plastic bag with silica gel because the silica will grasp the moisture left. Then you can put it in a rice bag for around 48-72 hours. Once you have done that check if there is any moisture left, if yes then dry it out again but do not power on the device. This should help you to get your phone back hopefully.
    Best of luck.
