Can someone provide an interpretation of adware in our apps?

How do they shoot ads to our phones.
Seems some are blatant while others are not so much in your face but may be working behind the scenes somehow.
A list of names etc so we know what to look for would be nice.
I have AVL and it gives me a name of the adware but not how they advertise.
This way we may be able to track down battery hogs.

Are you getting ads pushed through your notification screen? Just squashed those on my tablet and found no app associations. Had to go to "Airpush" and "opt-out".

Nope, just curious how each one works according to type.
