I ignorantly activated a BBC data plan on a Z3 phone, just to find out they are not compatible. Is it possible to get back my money? Or should I just count it a loss?

Why not contact the carrier directly. They will know. However if they have any resemblance to American Pre Paid (ATnT) they will will not refund.
The carrier will know for sure.
