I have Sprint as my carrier and I already have my primary "yahoo" email address set up on the device. I have tried email set up and receive the error message "invalid email address or password, contact gmail."

Is it a gmail accout that is already is exists? if so, check to make sure you don't have a "caps" issue.
You can also try to set up another secondary/"virgin" account with gmail to verify........
