Asking for a colleague here, as I myself use a Z10.
Sich e a week or so, without her (knowingly) having changed something, she no longer see the amount of unread mails, neither in the top start screen, nor on the " little envelope" itself
I tried looking for the setting on the device, but could not find it, as it has been too long since I used one myself.
Thank god for bb10, but could someone give me a hint?

I don't know how to help as i also use a BB10 device. But hopefully this little bump can get someone with more knowledge on the matter (than me) to help you and your colleague out. Maybe you can try searching the forums to see if anyone has a solution to this problem. Also, tell her to try restarting her phone if she hasn't done so yet and try a battery pull or reloading the os. Hope this helps
