I am using a generic charger with 2.1 Amp. The red led lits on, the battery with lightning icon appears at was followed by green led flashing on slowly but still got 0 after hours of charging.

Possibly a dead battery that needs replacing.

Agreed that battery is probably dead. You could also try another charger/cable just in case.

You may also wish to look up "stack charging" on Google.

In my case, I believe that the port had gotten lose on my PB, giving me iffy signals much like yours. My solution was to set it on top of the alternative three pin BB stand charger...and now it charges OK.

I know that's not quick and easy answer as you probably don't have one of those lying around, and there's no guarantee it would work for you if you bought one. .. just maybe. Good luck.
