For starters you could clean the camera glass to make sure it's not dirty.

Did it get worse at some point - or has it always been this way?

Hold the shutter button down until focus is achieved, and then let go in order to take the pic.

    I'm asking about your OS.

    For instance, I'm on 10.3.3.3057.

Do you touch a spot on the screen to lock focus before taking the picture?

have you tried a soft reset, maybe it is something digital rather than physical?

There is a known issue in these phones with the auto focus. I have had this problem in I think in multiple units. It just goes with the territory that this might happen. For me it's worth it. I can get a replacement for cheap and I love the phone.

Maybe this is your issue. It's hardware I think.

I've also noticed the same problem with my original Passport - the camera has been steadily worsening over the last six months or so; won't focus (about half the time), and on the occasions when it does focus before I press the shooting button it will often lose focus again before actually taking the shot. It's not the OS - I recently got another Passport and using the same OS build, its camera is fine. It just seems that the focusing mechanism is shot. I wonder what part might need replacing?

I remember discussing this year's ago. I think the consensus was that the autofocus ring gets stuck or something along those lines. Maybe parts are pressed together or they get debris stuck in them. Sometimes the motor is strong enough and sometimes not.

@markmall Brilliant! A little first-level disassembly, with great care and a camel-hair brush, seems to have fixed the problem. The motor was certainly working - it was moving in and out like a fiddler's elbow while the back cover was off, so with some equally careful cleaning and reassembly, it all seems to be working now. Thanks very much for this solution.
