As much as I love to use my company Passport, I do prefer to leave work at work. I was looking into getting an older Blackberry for Personal use. Maybe a 9000 or a 9900.

Then a colleague offered me his old Motorola MicroTAC International 8900 for the same price as one can find a nice 9000 on Amazon, $50.

Can such an old phone still be used today? I like something special, otherwise I would just get a random $20 flip. I think that's why I like Blackberry, the keyboard sets it apart from every other phone out there.

So, what to be aware of when buying an old dumb phone, just meant for calling with a decent battery on it?

That MicroTAC requires 2G GSM bands (900 and 1800 MHz), which were only introduced in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Even then, not every carrier has 2G available, so you'd have to check if their network is still around. The Bold 9000 and 9900 can use 3G networks, but they need BIS to work; again, you'd have to contact your carrier to see if they have BIS available.

Just get a Q10 or a Classic but after using a Passport all day, you might miss the jumbo screen
