After updating the BBM app it won't open; only shows an "Oops" message

This on a Huawei P9lite (model VNS-L31) running Android 6.0 and prior to the update the app worked fine.

The full error message reads "Oops Try moving to an area with better coverage or connect to WiFi". There's also a "retry" button. It doesn't go past this screen at all.

There is DEFINITELY no connection problem with the phone. Full signal or high speed WiFi makes no difference.

There is no rollback option.

I installed the update because the phone froze when I tried to open an attachment sent through BBM

I've uninstalled and redownloaded the app several times and also tried resetting the permissions in all possible combinations, and no luck.

Sounds like you got "phished" and your BBM is now fubar.

Who was the attachment from?
