I understand that Enterprise activation is not something I need nor want on my BB, but I'm trying to set up a regular old gmail and yahoo account, and there's no way to do that unless I contact BB or ATT.
Does this mean that the only way that I can find a phone that allows me to set up personal email is if I buy one brand new through my carrier????

So the phones you have have an IT policy on them? You don't want that? Reload the OS and get rid of it. You don't need to contact any carrier to set up email. Thousands of us set it up everyday without an issue. What type of phone do you have? What OS? is it controlled by a BES? We need more info to help you.
