    I am running 10.1.3.634 on my z30

    It won't let me load app icons to the home screen?

    My home screen shows the day and date only and you have to swipe right to get to apps.

    Is there a good reason for this, other than maybe power savings?

    Settings > Display > Show wallpaper when all apps are closed - Make sure that's turned OFF.
