Inspired by Thurask's idea. Who is the best space ship commander?

Must have commanded a crew of 4 or more. This qualifies Malcolm Reynolds and dis-qualifies Han Solo. TV and Movie only (sorry Honor).

    My top 5:

    1. Kirk (Shatner)
    2. Adama (Olmos)
    3. Avatar/Okita
    4. Janeway
    5. Reynolds

Maybe. Honestly, I never saw that whole series. I should try again.

And Serenity is one heck of a boat!
Mal might have been higher on my list if we had more episodes to judge him by.

In a best space ship thread, I would give Serenity points for utility. Every other category would score low. Weapon systems, endurance, powerplant (one engine, really?) crew accommodation, and its just damm ugly.

    What about Ripley?
A fan. But she never commanded a vessel.

    Adam Quark!
Wikipedia had trouble finding him. I should be old enough, reruns if nothing else. I have no memory of that show. Might have been so bad, my subconscious purged the memory.

While I appreciate Star Trek as much as any other Sci-Fi fan; I would be ludicrous to put Kirk (Shatner) over Han Solo (Harrison Ford).

Honorable mention: Lone Star (Bill Pullman), which just so happens to be a parody of Han Solo, lol.

Solo has his merits but for this thread, I specifically dis-qualified him because he is not a real captain. More like an airline pilot. Just operates day trips as the actual pilot.

Han, Chewie, Luke and Leia. He might have started out being a two man crew, but you can't disqualify him when the numbers match your criteria.

In "Return of the Jedi," Solo commandeered the Imperial Shuttle Tydirium. His crew... Leia, Luke, Chewie, C3PO and R2D2.
So technically, Solo should be included.

My definition of crew is people (sentient life forms) being employed to live and work on a ship full time. Ships that go on long term voyages. I don't think Luke and Leia fit that, but whatever. I'm not anti-Star Wars. This is the ask Bla1ze thread. He can yay or nay this if he wants.

If you own a boat, you're automatically the captain of that vessel.

What about the original Adama? Lorne Greene??

Although I do like EJO, especially from the Miami Vice days - hey does that count, even though he was a Lieutenant?

Yeah original Adama was good. More polished and philosophical than his re-imagined counter part. Much like the Kirk vs Picard personalities.

Sure on EJO. Usually gotta be a LT before a Cmdr or Capt

It was a British import like Dr Who although not quite as popular. I used to watch it too. It was VERY interesting. It's was kinda sorta like the current SyFi Network show Dark Matter.

Speaking about Dark Matter, how about Two?

Of course, pick whoever you want. I've already acquiesced to the Solo crowd. (can you be a crowd if you're solo?)

Dark Matter: Drat another show I haven't seen. Gotta catch up on the space operas. Got too many chicks hangin around me anyway. Need to do something they won't dig.
