BlackBerry India has only 15 employees left, down over 75% from last year

Staff exits add to Blackberry blues; employee count reduces to less than a fourth over past year

NEW DELHI: BlackBerry, the onetime smartphone leader, may be transforming itself in the global markets, but its operations in India have come to a near-halt with its staff count reduced to less than a fourth over the past year.

The Canadian handset maker had about 70 people in India in 2014 and is now down to about 15, with most of its senior management having quit, according to people aware of the developments. BlackBerry's head of India operations, Sunil Lalvani, put in his papers in June and went on to take charge of Qualcomm's India unit. In the interim, Matthew Tonkin, vice-president, carrier sales and distribution, APAC, is taking care of the India operations.

Sources said head of product management Advait Vaidya, an old hand at the company, has also resigned, while director of sales and distribution for India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh Sameer Bhatia moved in June to head brand retail at Seagate Technology.

Manoj Khilani, head of enterprise marketing a critical area for the company following its shift from retail to the corporate market left BlackBerry in January to head marketing and communications for Kronos, his LinkedIn profile showed. Most recently, Varghese Thomas, BlackBerry's director corporate communications and social media (India & SAARC Region), put in his papers, sources said.

"It's been a tough ride for all those in the company. People are moving on for better career options," said one of the people.

"BlackBerry remains committed to the India market and looks forward to continuing to work closely with our customers and partners," a company spokesperson said. "As BlackBerry moves into the next stage of its turnaround, we remain focused on capitalising on growth opportunities while driving toward sustainable profitability across all businesses.

This includes recruiting in those areas of our business that will drive growth in India."
