Why don't you realize that business and enterprise people are actually consumers?

If much smaller companies like Nest, FitBit, and Roku can make network connected device that seem to be growing in demand, why can't BlackBerry make devices like fitness bands, Media adapters for TV's, and Smart watches to see if they can make money on them? I'm tired of seeing the lame CrackBerry forum excuse team say they don't have the resources when their are many companies in these markets with much less resources than BlackBerry has at their disposal, and don't have their own OS!

The companies in question, while smaller, have MORE resources than BB.

How is that possible? Doesn't BB have $2.7B in cash?

It's possible because you aren't taking BB's EXPENSES into consideration. BB's expenses are HUGE - they still have 7000 employees, and they're already in a very expensive-to-be-in business where they have been LOSING a half-billion of cash per quarter (and MUCH more than that in equity), plus they have a debt of $1.25B that will have to be paid back.

BB is like a movie star that was making $10M a year, and so he bought himself this huge house and a bunch of cars and charged up his credit cards, so that he has to come up with $600,000 a month to pay his bills. Except his recent movies have tanked, and now he's only making $150,000/year doing indie movies. Even though he may have $16M in the bank, he's now burning through that money alarmingly fast.

Compare him to a guy who also makes $100,000 a year, but this guy lives in a $900/month studio apartment and drives a 9-year-old paid-off Honda Civic. His monthly bills are only $1500/month. This second guy has a LOT more "play money" than the first guy, because his expenses are so much lower.

Roku probably has 40 employees, and they make a very few products with a very tight focus. Several of the fitness band companies are half that size, and make an even smaller number of focused, targeted products. And they are profitable.

You can't compare their situation to BB's, because they are nothing alike.

Thread is titled if you could ask Chen. I want him to answer. Your speculating and some of the companies in question have used less than $100 Million total over years.

How many active BlackBerry users are there currently?

The numbers were dropping pretty quickly when they stopped reporting. And back then they were selling many more devices than they do now.

    50 million? 40 million?

    My question would be....

Why is no cash being made available for marketing? Not some over the top criptic "guy running from scene to scene, keep moving", but short few second ads, to the point showing the phone screen, showing what it will do. People see....people want.

Why BlackBerry can't produce a device of high specifications, and a complete performance, with a moderate price that might be able to stop the android users irony from our low performance devices in comrarison with other devices from other companies, that will be a device which is able to compete and beat the other Devices in the market?

That's easy - they don't have the buying power that other real manufactures have like Apple. Nor do they manufacture any of the base components like Samsung does.

Their past model of purchasing components from Asia, shipping them to Canada or Mexico for Assembly was much more expensive than having plants in Asia doing the Assembly. FoxCon is going to help reduce the building cost.... but where BlackBerry might put in a order for 2 Million devices over a years time. Apple is putting in an order for maybe 50 million of one product line per year.

BlackBerry is never going to build a High Specification device and be able to selling it at a competitive price, because they can't compete with the likes of Apple and their huge volume deals, or Samsung (also high volume deals) who makes many of their own components.

Now at launch many argued that BlackBerry should have provided a competitive devices (Z30 maybe) and launched it at cost to build the platform quickly... and that may have helped some at launch, but the problems with the buggy launch OS and a total lack of developer support would have made it a useless effort. At this point they can't afford to give things away.

    They ARE a niche player...
