how is it bad for the company and shareholders? He saved the company by trimming fat and dropping dead weight products and has pivoted the company to almost all software. It might not grow as quick as some want but I certainly see the company in far better shape than 5 years ago

5 years on you want the runtime to be only at Lollipop?

    Well...

BB10 was released 5 years ago and we're on Jellybean, so there IS precedent...

Nope! Taught BlackBerry was a goner for sure

At best some big company would buy them really cheap, and break up the parts of the company and sell them off. Or they end up filing bankruptcy and end up in the hands of some Chinese company trying to sell their cheap knock-offs at a premium using a dead brand (like they do with most electronics).

LOL. That's way different than BBMo/TCL licensing deal.

Nobody thought BlackBerry will survive till 2018 when Chen took over the reigns . Now they have route map ahead with Chen at the helm.

Yeah... but not the same BlackBerry. He couldn't save the hardware business, it was already too late. But at least he moved them to Android and got someone to take over the reigns for now.

as best paid ceo in canada, hopefully he got the best results to match in near future (big spender start from ceo down... with qualcomm money already gone based on last quarterly report)... contrast to Tesla Musk salary of $49,920 for 2017 (45,936 for 2016 and 37,584 for 2015), not sure BB got what it pay for... (not sure Chen was out perform Elon Musk by X times based on the salary...).
Qualcomm founder is thinking about take it private... BB might have better outcome if it was taken private like Dell... I am convinced Chen saved BB, until I see my stock in mid 20 range at least... will see. IMHO.

The share options and grants is where JC will receive the bulk of his compensation and that only means something if the company does well and the share price increases. Also, he's a software company turnaround specialist. His management ideas are used to doing more at time of having less to do it with. BlackBerry and JC are good for each other.

A lot of times with people in this position it’s not always about money, it’s about the challenge . When you consider the turn around that the company has made and the fact that it still has work to do Chen probably figures his job is not done.

Yes, but isn't his job done? He pulled BlackBerry out of the nose dive and landed it gently. They are now on the right path.

It is taken out of context... a statement of what could have happened without Chen/ BlackBerry ending phone manufacturing. The losing millions did happen, but they were saved from filing bankruptcy.

Excellent move by BlackBerry to reward John Chen with 5 years Contract. This shows the confidence in his abilities. John Chen took hard decisions to trim certain businesses which brought down the losses . BlackBerry has now become a stable company and I am sure will scale newer heights in the coming 5 years under John's dynamic leadership.

Actually, I think it is materially different. The TCL phones still have a decent amount of the BlackBerry "special sauce" of a hardened OS and focus on written communications. It's not as good as BBOS and BB10 in that regard, but the market for the "traditional" BlackBerry approach without broad 3rd party app support doesn't really exist, unfortunately.

BlackBerry Mobile is pretty much the best outcome we could have hoped for when it comes to handsets. It's not as good as BB10 for me, personally, but it's better than the other Android alternatives I've used.
