I plan on getting an iPad for myself and my son in April and was wondering if there is any way of tethering my BlackBerry or iPhone to it. It's not a deal breaker but I would appreciate this feature. Thanks.

Nope, Steve has already said that this is not going to happen on the iPad.
The wifi version can tether to the palm pre on verizon...why can't apple allow a mobile hotspot app for their phone?
Because then what would keep people from just buying the base model with no 3G when they could just tether their phones and get internet that way? It would destroy the entire purpose of having a 3G-equipped iPad.

Not to sound rude, but the whole world doesn't run on iPhones. Not every iPad buyer will also own an iPhone, and people that do own an iPhone may not be able to afford 2 data plans. So why not give them the option to use their existing data through tethering?

Not to be mean, but have you been following Apple and it's communist leader? They don't give options, Apple just tells you how your supposed to use your device. This is nothing new, why are you surprised?
Hahan I suppose I'm not surprised, just disappointed. Apple is one of the market leaders, and should be setting an example. I really like my iPhone for what it is, but the closed and extremely moderated ecosystem just drove me away.
But I guess ethics mean nothing to a tyrannical company who seem to try and abolish any technological advancement that they do not profit from.

lol, I couldn't have said it better Mike. The iPhone is a nice phone and lots of people love it, that's fine, to each his own. I myself, despise anything Apple, I will not be suckered into their communistic ways. It's my device, I will use it how I want to. Apple is a great company, makes good products, but I will NEVER buy anything from them. I vote with my wallet, and nothing comes out of it for Apple and it's godly leader.
So then why hang out in the iPhone forum? I mean I get you hate Apple, I hate Windows so I understand, I want my stuff to just work and nobody does that better then Apple. One thing I don't do is hang out in forums for other devices and for sure not on any windows forums. Just curious why you feel the need to come in here at all.
crackvegas78 I don't "hang out" in any particular forum. I always browse "new posts" when something interest me, I click on it. Just cause I hate Apple and it's dictator doesn't mean I don't like to be knowledgeable about it. I like anything new and tech related. I also like to have some information, so I can bring all the Apple fanboys down some.
So I'm sorry if I offended you and Mr. Jobs, I didn't mean to.
Also I want to say, I browse the Crackberry forums, you know, The #1 site for BlackBerry users (& abusers). I know you have this sub-forum here on CB, but isn't there a site for iPhone users? Or does Steve not allow that?
And I was a Blackberry user for years, until I moved on to the iPhone. My point is really if you hate Apple so much, then why would anything having to do with Apple interest you. And for the record people like can not offend me, you assume that I was since I asked you a question but alas you were wrong. And you really have contributed nothing to this thread, you never answered the OP, just stated how much you hate Apple. I am not a fanboy by the way, I just do not understand people like you that feel the need to hate on them.
lol. Excuse my interruption.
I was just in the BB forums and on my way over to the Android sub-forum when I noticed a link here that said, "Will the iPad allow...." I didn't even know the question, but I had to laugh cuz I figured the answer would end up being "no." Guess I was right.
I heard that Apple means 'rape' . . . in some language. Can't remember which, though...
(((okay...heading over to the land of free-roaming droids))) :D
Stay cool guys.
To be honest, i'm surprised that the iPad won't allow tethering. It's going to be used on AT&T and everyone knows what the iPhone did to AT&T...do we want that overload problem to get worse?
Allowing tethering for customers would really decrease the load on AT&T's network and it may incite MORE people to buy iPads, which is more money for Apple.
I think the $30 extra data plan is going to scare off people...yes, people buy those plans for their phones, but many people have them already. It's going to be hard to justify coughing up another $30/month.
@ crackvegas78
Ummm... Did you read the thread? Someone asked why Apple doesn't give options, I answered that, didn't I? Nothing new there. I'll say it again too, I like anything new and tech related, read my previous posts. Apple fanboys love to boast about how the almighty iPhone, and anything Apple, was sent down by the gods. I like letting those people know that the iPhone isn't the be all and end all device they all think it is.
Also, if you "moved on to the iPhone," why didn't you move on to the iPhone forum? Or do you just miss BB that much, and your Apple pride won't let you switch back? And for the record, telling me you aren't offended is showing me you are. The fact that your arguing with me shows your unconditional love for Apple, and you claim your not an fanboy... haha
We've hijacked this thread enough, I've made my point, so I'm moving on. See ya in another thread.
No, not every iPad buyer will also own an iPhone. 2 things I was trying to get at with my statement.
1. OP said BB or iPhone. Not going to happen.
2. Think about how many iPad owners will have an iPhone. Enough to cripple the sales of the iPad if it were possible to tether.
If people can't afford 2 data plans, then stick with the wifi version, and use the iPhone for on-the-go data. Although, I can't imagine going from >$100 to $20 more a month will hurt too terribly bad, especially if they CHOOSE to go that route.
