This isn't anything unusual...GPS turn by turn subscription..just think, TomTom is probably going to be around $150 when its released to the app store..if they did subscription, it'll be $12.50 a month.

What's wrong with google maps? Just not turn by turn?

Google Maps doesnt do voice turn by turn.

And I agree 9.99/month is expensive, thats $120 for a year. Id rather pay one up front fee and have unlimited access for basically ever.

I doubt Tomtom software will be $125 either. The software for other platforms is about $100, and from what Ive seen iPhone software is generally cheaper than on other platforms (probably because of high sales volume).

For example the Beejive IM program is only $10 on iphone vs $30 on Blackberry

IM+ is only $10 on iphone (on sale for $6) vs $40 on Blackberry and Windows mobile.

Id guess $50-75 for Tomtom, which is about 1/2 a year of ATT nav. At worst its $100 like other platforms, which is still less than 1 year of ATT Nav and doesnt need data to work. Still a better and cheaper solution IMO.

I'm waiting for TomTom. I shudder at the thought of having to download maps when I need them from AT&T, i'm happy with their service so far and I haven't had any coverage problems yet, but you can't get 3G everywhere. I would much rather have my maps stored locally and pay for updates just in case.
