They both typically pull the same channel. Because of the high encryption rate of CDMA, EVDO (the DO is data only) can only handle processing one at a time. The stillborn EVDV (data & voice) would have corrected that & substantially increased speeds, but LTE does even faster speeds.
LTE isn't quite as bandwidth efficient as EVDV, but overall offers a lot more bang for the network buck.
When running both data & voice on GSM, the data speeds can drop - only so much will fit in that channel. The problem created with iPhone is that people who wouldn't have considered a smartphone now get one. So much of the iPhone experience is data intensive & AT&T's network just wasn't designed to handle the increased data load. It would have completely crashed T-Mobile's network. VZW & Sprint are both better able to handle the traffic, but Sprint is missing the licenses to have more bandwidth. Even with reduced lines, their network is much more strained than VZW's, but is not in as bad a shape as AT&T's in some areas.
Data & voice is coming with LTE & based on the licenses, VZW will have bandwidth to spare - it may even create an opportunity to (gasp) reduce prices.

Tony Malone said VZW will not replace its CDMA 3G networks. It will just overlay LTE, so you'll have Dual Mode devices for the network. Same with CDMA/WiMax Dual Mode devices with Sprint, they'll have to make a device that can fully handle that.

Yeah wtf is with this guy keeping us on topic. Oh and VZW doesn't have the iphone yet go cry people srsly. You know at&t people are glad the storm didn't go to them lol

What are you talking about? AT&T is the reason they aren't getting the Storm. They were hoping they could create a huge blow by taking Verizon's baby but it didn't go that way. It's too much competition for their baby, which is a failed mentality. That move would definitely make Verizon try and get the iPhone. AT&T is going to lock it down, but you know Verizon got the money to do whatever.
Seriously, back to the off topic. My on topic is wack.

Tony Malone said that - Eric Zeman & others quoted him, but most excerpted the comments - if you were to give the entire story, the context in which he was speaking pertained to concerns about existing service.
So VZW will continue to offer EVDO until they decommission EVDO, which is already in a semi-soft timeline.
They have already been soliciting bids to decommission the current network, starting late 2013 or early 2014.
It doesn't really matter, as no devices run simultaneously on two data technologies. And there are currently devices that will not operate on all technologies.
Shortly after VZW started rolling out their digital network, they started offering all-digital devices, as well as those which would run both AMPS & the new technology. The same thing will happen with LTE, including devices which won't run CDMA at all - LTE devices with GSM.

Ok... Put the gun down... I said that I'm sure AT&T people are probably glad they didn't get the storm. A simple statement. I didn't say anything beyond that. Back on topic... This thread was something about someone being frustrated about VZW not having the iphone...
