So I tried the 2 methods in question

    purple rain
    and
    dev-team

I know there will be different outcomes for different phones
why , dunno it just happens - stranger things have been known to
    happen.

    - so i tested purple rain it froze the phone almost bricked
had the latest version was attempting to jailbreak 3.0.1

    - then tested dev - team version worked fine
using the 3.0 trick on version 3.0.1

now having said that - most things worked fine phone performed normally
for the most part. But the battery drain was a bit much. Since there are extra resources being used. cydia, winterboard ... ect

there are good apps, and tools, utilities in the jail break like the mail mod

but i felt it drained battery too much and was a resource hog over all ..
I am sure some will not feel this way but. I notice the slightest changes.

backgrounder is another good app, for those looking to try out the jailbreak on 3gs, cydia is a collection of 3rd part apps from a kind of alternative itunes apps world. There are many options and the interface works pretty good. apps go in just as easy as coming out. Sometimes if you are trying to load in a large app 8 meg or so cydia will time out, its to be expected dont be alarmed.

the Dev-Team Jail break does work

and it does not erase your previous content while or after the process is
    underway.

So I loaded a hightech theme and vampire SMS, and transparent dock, mail mod which will allow email checking as fast as every (1 minute )and a few others .. for the most part all worked fine.

but i noticed some apps not responding well after jailbreak like twitterific
gave me some errors .. and things were a slight bit sluggish - but you have
to remember this is a entire interface being loaded onto the iphone OS

this has been a test of iphone 3GS and Jailbreak 3.0.1

:: in the end I decided to restore the iphone to factory 3.0.1
due to my own preference in performance. I am sure others
will not mind the minor percentage of performance loss

hope some one finds this useful

Jailbroken iPhone do run a bit more rough than the stock iPhones. That's just a small price to pay. Also, winterboard seems to decrease performance aswell.

I see no noticeable decrease in performance. I used PurpleRa1n to jailbreak the 1st time and just jailbroke with Redsn0w last weekend after I updated to 3.01. I do notice a slight decrease in battery life, but no freezes or lag of any kind on any of my apps. I think Winterboard is the cause of most performance problems but since I don't use it, I have no such issues.
