I have never jailbroken (creating words now haha) an iPhone but I have a friend who went here:

MOBIZ: LATEST : Jailbreaking your iPhone 3G is ONLINE

Might just read up on it. I hear that iTunes is supposed to backup your data, so if you brick it you can restore. Not sure on that though.

And guys, c'mon, he asked for specific advice on an iPhone, not our opinions on iPhones versus Blackberries. Sheesh...

    Jailbreaking is the easiest.

Type "QuickPwn 2.1 for windows" or ".... for mac" in google and find the QuickPwn 2.1. It takes 10-15 minutes.

Ok I read the previous post on this and am still wondering...

    1) Can I still use itunes and the app store like I do now?
    2) Will the performance of my phone lag after Jailbreaking?
    3) Is MMS Really worth Jailbreaking

    1 - Yes
2 - Yes, it did for me and doing any modification to your device will slow it down. The question is how much and will it be noticeable to you. More than likely it will. Me and one of my boys went back to normal because of the lag. ShortStop from the forums did as well.
3 - Not to me as it more than likely will not work on at&t. We have email!

I did it and I went back! I guess i just didn't want any possibilities for problems. So I guess what i want to know now is will I get in trouble with Apple for trying?

It is easy and yes everything that you are using now will work. Now a lot of other stuff will work as well. You can have things run in the background, video record, tether for free. It is great and simple.
