Would I be able to take the SIM Card out of my Storm and put it in an unlocked iPhone to make it work on VZW? Is it possible? Please tell me what you think.
Thanks

Impossible.
No because Verizon uses CDMA, not GSM (sim cards). The reason the Storm has a sim card is so it can work internationally and with other carriers that do use a sim card. The storm is dual band, the iPhone is not.
Storm is quad band as is the iPhone.. =P
The Storm has a SIM chip, it's called "Dual mode" meaning it'd operate on both GSM as well as CDMA frequencies.
The band is in reference in to which frequencies it attaches to.
On CDMA, it's attaching to 850/1900, whereas on GSM, it's attaching to 850/900/1800/1900 <- That's the quad band right there.
Those are the same frequencies that the iPhone attaches to plus the UMTS frequencies 850/1900/2100
Can't happen. Yes, the Storm 9530 is able to use both GSM and CDMA, BUT... you can only use the SIM card it comes with if you're in Europe or somewhere out of the States. It wont connect to AT&Ts or T-Mobile's network.
That's not entirely true. The Storm can be unlocked to work on AT&T's GSM network. I have 2 of them working on AT&T...
EDIT: Sorry, I thought this post was dnorth saying that the Storm won't operate on ATT/Tmobile..
With Verizon' new LTE network GSM phones in theory will work on Verizon ,correct?
READ HIS POST, he wants to us an iPhone on VZW. IT CAN"T BE DONE, VZW is CDMA ONLY not GSM.
This is from the spec page on blackberry site for storm:
"Wireless Networks
UMTS/HSPA: 2100 MHz
North America: 850 MHz GSM/GPRS networks
North America: 1900MHz GSM/GPRS networks
Europe/Asia Pacific: 1800MHz GSM/GPRS networks
Europe/Asia Pacific: 900MHz GSM/GPRS networks
Dual-Band: 800/1900 MHz CDMA/Ev-DO networks"
If I understand this correctly and I may be wrong :o
north america uses GSM
apple specs: iphone 3gs
"Cellular and wireless
UMTS/HSDPA (850, 1900, 2100 MHz)
GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
Wi-Fi (802.11b/g)
Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR"
verizon specs for storm :
"Network Support: Dualband 800/1900 MHz CDMA/EVDO Rev. A networks; QuadBand: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE networks SingleBand: 2100 MHz UMTS/HSPA networks"
So now I am really confused, verizon states GSM and UMTS which the apple iphone 3g has. So my question is:
Why would an apple iphone 3gs not work with verizon?? I am looking hopfully for someone to explain it as apposed to just saying it won't work! thank you
Verizon is only CDMA in North America. The iPhone does not have CDMA capability at all! The Storm works on CDMA only in North America, unless you get it unlocked and then you will be able to use it on EDGE 3G in North America. The Storm will only get GSM 3G outside of North America where available.
Thank you mpafr012 now it is clear. Does anyone ever think Iphone will come to Verizon
I do believe next year when Verizon opens up their new LTE network ,It will be compatible with GSM technology.
thats is good to know, I do like iphone :D and verizon coverage
If Verizon' new LTE is fully compatible with GSM like I have heard, I will be switching over, I had a Verizon workphone and it was by far the best cellphone coverage I have ever had.
Who knows when Verizon will even roll out its LTE coverage sufficient to start accepting contracts from iPhone. And further, who even knows if Apple wants to put its iPhone on Verizon. And who knows if Verizon is willing to accept the terms from Apple?
I can tell you there is a lot standing in the way of a Verizon/iPhone partnership, and basically the only thing giving weight to the parternship is some relatively small percentage of the consumer base.
My guess is that we won't see an Verizon/iPhone partnership for at least 3-5 years, or maybe never.
I don't see a partnership in the future either. But if there network opens up to GSM phones, Then I don't see why an iPhone,Nokia or Blackberry wouldn't work.
Verizon won't have sufficient LTE true coverage untill late 2011.. until then.. they may have what 5-10 major cities in 2010.. not good enough.
That's a good point to take into consideration.
