iphone text smileys on sms texts

Girl friend has a Iphone I am using a bb9700

when we sms text eachother on her Iphone she gets the Smileys/emoticons in TEXT format..

any help would be greatful to solve this

Emoji only works from iPhone to iPhone I believe. My wife tried this when I still had my 9700, and smileys still showed as : )
