- So my birthday's next week, and I'm stuck between asking for a Blackberry Bold or an Iphone 3g. Right now I'm leaning towards the iphone, because the Blackberry jsut can't come close to the app store offerings, and the web browsing is so much faster. A little about me below, so you know what I need it for, then please give me your advice and experiences.
(turning) 23 years old, senior in college
will be working in congress or other government position within the year, most likely
had blackberries for last 3 years (ATT Curve 8310 for the past year)
My primary usage for the blackberry is the email. I don't have an enterprise hookup (which I realize iphone DOES support), but instead I use BIS for my gmail (which is push, amazing), and I understand that iphone is not push like the blackberry, but I do need it as fast as possible? I work in politics, so my emails are also very important. But I really want the better browsing and media experience.
Thanks for your help and advice.
As a final component of this, I'm currently under contract with ATT and non-upgrade-eligible, so I take it the cost for the 16GB is $500 for me?01-28-09 03:10 PMLike 0 - Just my 2cents. If media and pictures are important then the bigger screens will be best. You would want the phone with the most memory, applications that fit your lifestyle and some ability for growth. But if you are after multiple connectivity seemless integration look at the Bold a little more closely. 2 year contracts are expensive and you will live with it for a while.01-28-09 07:02 PMLike 0
- Whatever device you like the most is the one you should get. I would suggest try one for a while and then try the other. No one can make that decision for you. I use email heavily with my current job and I have an iphone. In the past 6 months I've had the curve, bold, storm and iphone. I like all of them but right now I like the iphone the most because it suits my needs the right now.
You will just have to see which one you like. An iphone does have a lot of neat features but it's not just a toy as some blackberry users for characterize it. I use it for a lot of business features and the applications available make your life easier and blow any apps available on blackberry away. On the other hand, blackberry emailing and texting is hands down better and basic features like MMS and video recording come in handy. But I guess that's not a business use huh.
Honestly, blackberries are nt strictly for business use and iphone are not strictly for play. It's all about which one you prefer. I had the iphone back in Sept and then I got a Bold when it came out. I went directly back to my iphone because I missed all the things my iPhone could do. Then I went to a Storm (had to try it out), sold that because the Bold was better (IMO) and the storm suited me better than the Bold. So it's up to you. I'll be trying the next latest blackberry too lol. Good luck with your choice.01-30-09 03:04 PMLike 0 - Are you there now? I have read (do not have experience myself - maybe scorpidodsu can assist) that the Bold's reception is generally better and the iPhone probably has the worse 3G reception. Does not matter which you have if you can't get a good signal. I had a Storm for two weeks - loved it except the phone was crap (ear speaker and outgoing sound quality), so I took it back. Then I tried the iPhone and liked it but I got crappy 3G at my home and I work from home. Back it went. I would really like to move to ATT b/c I use their other services but the cell signal stinks. Maybe I'll try again when the new iPhone comes out.
Oh, yes, there is probably going to be another iPhone out this June/July. Get the Bold now and then if the new one looks good, sell the Bold.01-30-09 04:26 PMLike 0 -
- Have both, love them both...my advice is....get both! lol
But seriously, the signal strength is the same (after the 2.2 update on the iphone) and for the reasons you mentioned, you probably will be better suited with the iphone. The Bold's web browser sucks... it might be better than other previous bb's but its still terrible compared to the iphones browser.
The iphone email comes very quickly, just as fast as the Bold. Typing on the iphone is great once you get accustomed to it. I can type very very fast on my iphone.
But whatever you do, for the love of God, please do not buy a Storm...lol.
That phone is the worst piece of equipment Blackberry has ever put its name on!01-30-09 11:06 PMLike 0 - I'd get both the Bold and the iPhone 3g!
Then you have the best of both worlds!
If not then I'd say the Bold is the one to go with.
Honestly I could live without the iPhone(against my will) but could not really live without my BB.

When I first had the Bold and at that time my wife had her iPhone, the Bold did appear to always have more bars of 3G coverage. But after some updates the iPhone consistently has 5 bars where they previous has 3-4. So I'm not sure if they actually has to do with the updates or if they are playing tricks with us by showing us 5 bars when the signal quality is 3-4 LOL. But anyhow, I haven't had any reception problems since my second go around with the iPhone. If possible I would recommend getting both and switch SIM cards according to your mood lol.01-31-09 10:18 AMLike 0 - Thanks. When I got the iPhone home it was showing 4-5 bars for 3G and I was like GREAT! Until I hit the web, then it would drop to EDGE within about 30 seconds. Then I made some calls and one dropped while I was walking downstairs. Darn it! I have read on some other forums that folks have had some problems lately in the Austin TX area, so I might try again. But at this point, I might as well just wait for iPhone v3 this June.01-31-09 01:20 PMLike 0

- I've had a Bold since the first day it was released, I really like it, best Blackberry yet, imo. If you do mostly (heavy) emailing and text then it may be the best way to go.
I bought an iPhone last Saturday and it's GREAT, much more 'fun' than the Bold. For Entertainment, tons of apps to download, and web surfing its an excellent device, also surfs the web much faster than the Bold.
My reason for buying was the iPhone is that I'm "too much business" and I wanted a change. I want to slow down on the emailing and constantly checking email on my blackberry. I'm now going to try and do most of that work on my laptop, with wireless everywhere it's the way to go I think, bigger screen, better keyboard ...
I've had every blackberry made since the days of Rims' first 957 model with the exception of the Storm, now my wife has the 8900 and I have the Bold. Unless you truly 'need' to read and reply to emails instantly when you're on the go and if you're writing long replies get the Bold ... maybe it's because I've used a BB for so long I need a change, but I'm beginning to think an iPhone is the best choice unless you want an email and text machine like the Bold.
I'm beginning to realize the iphone does everything else better, emailing/typing isn't so bad especially if you just need to type a quick reply.
I got tired of rolling the trackball and clicking through to access app's etc, the iphone touch screen is great.
If you need a Smart Phone for frequent typing, emails and text buy a BB. If you're not going to be doing a lot of typing and don't need instantaneous (push) email and like the entertainment value of the iPhone then for sure get the iPhone. I find emails on my iPhone come through very fast, (gmail, our server mail etc).
PS - I've played with Storm quite a bit, I really wanted to buy it but it's not for me for sure Click screen, menu's overall design it's just not for me.
Hope that helps.
My goal is to retire from BB use for a while and use my iphone for not just my business but for fun too.
Hope that helps.Last edited by uniquest; 02-03-09 at 09:53 PM.
02-03-09 09:36 PMLike 0 - 3G signal strength is probably not going to be sn issue for a political person at 23 years old since he is likely to be working in a major city with great coverage. Honestly, I really like the Bold, but I am almost twice the original poster's age and use my phone for business. If I was 23, I'd be happer with the iPhone.
However, two caveats: most politicians I know, and I know a few, use Blackberries, and their staff members use Berries, too. Also, I noted from the original post that email is important. The iPhone really doesn't stack up for email send capability because of its lack of a keyboard. I have tried to fall in love with iPhones, and even demoed one for a few days, and the screen typing is not easy enough to use for heavy email/texters. You can easily test this at an AT&T store by just trying one. And I don't care that iPhone users say you get better over time; I could type pretty well the first time I held a Blackberry, and have gotten better.
Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com02-03-09 09:54 PMLike 0 - DuviRetired ModeratorIMO, emailing/sms typing is not bad on the iPhone at all... in fact, I type faster on the iPhone than any QWERTY blackberry. For me, the bold is the way to go as I love bbm, feel like I need instant push + gmail., and turn by turn navigation with AT&T Navigator.02-03-09 10:18 PMLike 0
- i had the i-phone since it first came out, 1st gen, 2nd gen and the i-phone 3g and i have a blackberry curve 8310 and the new berry bold 9000 and i feel that the blackberry is by far the best of all 3 by a long ways. my bold has better wifi, the 3g browser is alot faster and the applacations for the berry and allmost identical to the i-phone. the gps for the berry and e-mail is hands down the best between the two (i-phone and bold). the only major difference to me is the i-phone is a true touchscreen (far better than the storm) with a larger screen. i guarantee you go for the bold and you will not be dissappointed. totally better 3g by far.02-04-09 04:24 PMLike 0
- Well, spoke to the Congressional IT person, and decided to go with the Iphone. I'm really looking forward to the new features, and it's only a 2-year deal, besides.
According to the tech office, they will be supporting Iphone soon, but even if they don't, the congressional office will pay for a "work phone" (blackberry), so when I need to do that, I'll get the bold ALSO.
In any case, got the iphone last night, and couldn't be happier so far. Just waiting for slingplayer to make it from the blackberry over to the iphone (slated for 1q release this year). Thanks all for the advice. What really swung it was my father (a very busy lawyer/emailer) telling me how he got used to the email on his ipod touch, and realizing I wanted to slow down email responses anyhow. IT doesn't make sense to always be on call!! Thanks again.02-05-09 02:51 AMLike 0 - I think I'm going to buy a bold and keep my iPhone and see which I want to end up keeping. As someone said, iPhones hold their value extremely well so to sell it would never be a problem.02-06-09 09:13 PMLike 0
- Hey guys. To those of you who have both the iPhone and the Bold, are you sharing a SIM with them or just paying for two lines? I have both and for the life of me, can't stand the thought of parting with either. I am assuming that if you are sharing a SIM, you are using a Blackberry plan since the iPhone plan won't work on a Berry. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who has to have the best of both worlds. I just need an affordable way to have both... :-)
Thanks for sharing any thoughts you may have.02-06-09 10:33 PMLike 0 - Look ive had almost every phone possible and with the iphone although it is a great ipod...great mp4...great iBrowser etc.. it is NOT a good phone...
eMails work a treat but do u care about the images on a email being able to zoom in?
ive had 2 BB now and i think when i upgrade im going to get another BB.. also if u want an iPhone Apple are going to announce a new one at the MacWorld conference thingy
