Im going to Africa in a couple days and am bringing my iphone alone only as an emergency and ipod so I dont wanna get hit with any charges, what can I do to avoid them ?

Put the phone in airplane mode if you just want to use it as an iPod. Also, if you do need to use it for an emergency, go to settings-general-network, and turn data roaming off.

I travel outside the USA about 4 times a year. I go to various places, but when I land in the foreign country I keep my phone in the airline mode. When I settle down for the evening, I will turn off the airline mode and allow the phone to sync with the outside world, then I put it back in airline mode.

This way I pay for a little of the data roaming, which I don't mind, and I can keep up with the "Jones"

Can't you get the Iphone unlocked by AT&T and use a local simcard?

No..AT&T wont unlock it at all. Not even if you pay full retail price.

You'd need to have bought it directly from Apple then put AT&T's service on it.
