    I sold my 16gb iPhone 3G before getting my 32gb 3Gs.

My question is though, if someone buys the 16gb instead of the 32gb-

How would they know if it was the iPhone 3Gs vs the iPhone 3G?

Since on the body of the phone it only says "iPhone"...

On the 16GB models the only way to visually to tell the difference is the model number and the lettering is pale grey on the 3G as compared to a shiny chrome on the 3GS.

Good question... but I have one solution. if they have the original box and the serial number on the device matches the box. The box states what model it is.

    Ahhh.. Okay...

    Yea, since I bought mine from Apple I don't doubt that it's a 3Gs-

But if I ever want to buy another off eBay, I'll need to exercise more caution I guess.

besides the reflective lettering on the back a quick way to check is to check serial number or download an app called free memory it might be .99 or free and then shut the phone off and turn it back on as soon as it loads load the free memory app. the 3gs will load with anywhere from 130 -160mb free
the 3g is around 60-80mb since it only has 128 and 3gs has 256mb.

it works as a memory monitor but it does not free up memory.

any memory status or monitor will work it does not have to be free memory but that is what i sue to monitor my memory

Or the bootup time. If it loads in less than 45 secs, it's definitely a 3GS.

You can also look at the apps. Just look to see if it has a compass and you will know it's a 3GS right away.

Yup and see if there's native video recording. I wouldn't buy one from ebay unless it's a seller with a great rep and they have pictures/materials to prove it's a 3GS. Smart sellers who know their products will do do that.
