Do you have the 3G model? You might as well update to 3.1.2 and then use blackra1n so you would have all the 3.0 OS features. Just update then jailbreak and unlock. When you are updating it will back up everything and nothing should be lost.

i don't think it's 3g model. i think it's first generation.

Ok well the metal backing in the original iPhone and plastic black or white is the 3G or 3GS. Either way, just upgrade to the latest OS and then use blackra1n. Should take less than 15 mins to upgrade, restore, jailbreak and unlock.
