I've unlocked Blackberry's before, but have never looked into an iphone. I know it's a software hack, but what are the drawbacks to unlocking a 3gs iphone to use on another carrier?

I have a iPhone 3G, and it is unlocked on T-Mobile. It works just fine. Acctually the phone has more capacity when the phone is unlocked and jailbroken to customize it.

It's really up to you what you want to do. Haven't encountered any drawbacks yet.

As its a software unlock, can it be locked again by future iphone updates? Is it possible to brick the phone?

only drawback I can think of is updating on itune. If you do so and the upgrade may not be jailbreakable yet... other than that none

Yeah I'm still on 3.1.2. I'm not going to update untill a major update comes out. This recent update is not worth updating. Plus I wouldn't be able to unlock again untill a unlock and jailbreak is available for future updates.

with updating I just check the itunes box to not ask everytime and basically ignore updating

My G3S iPhone is unlocked and I use 2 carries (Voda/TMO) often and I have
had no problems.

I've had an unlocked iPhone since it was possible (2007) and I've never really had any problems. The only problem with the new 3GS is that if it is the newer version it will be a tethered jailbreak.

I also got an unlocked iPhone and it is just the same iPhone i have before the time I modified it. Based on my experience, unlock iPhone is better for I can do unlimited things. I remembered I have unlocked with the help of phone phreakz.
