Turn of the 3g and turn down the brightness a little, and yes,all those apps have gotta be draining on the battery,i wonder if jailbreaking and unlocking the phone will curtail some of the battery issues....
Maybe turn off 3G or Bluetooth?
My battery life has always been shocking. I've tried testing to see whether it's bacause the phone is jailbroken but it really hasnt made a difference.
I have tomtom, beejive, , facebook, tweetie, shazam, boxcar , Remote & ebay. So not many apps that really could drain the battery.
I tend to get about 6-7 hours usage out of it. So I always make sure I have a charger about.
Yep. Battery life here is pretty lousy too. More so when I'm at work, with poor signal due to the constuction of the building, I'm assuming is the problem. If I'm using it a lot then I am lucky to get 5 straight hours of usage. It's been like this since I've gotten it. No push notification except emails and I have SBSettinfgs installed which may run the battery down a tad quicker but nothing too dramatic.
LogMeIn Ignition, Jaadu RDP, JaaduVNC, uMonitor, dTunes, Mobile Terminal, IRChon, Installous, Cydia (obvious), Winterboard, MxTube, Backgrounder, Respring, MIM, and quite a few games and media apps. Regardless I've never carried my iPhone without my charger nearby. Poor battery FTL. It's a small price to pay for being able to download torrents, files or movies I want on the go that can be stored in a downloads folder for later transfer to my computer. Or could just remote my PC and download them. Which brings me to a question? Anyone know if they have a bandwidth limit for smartphones? I know we pay for "unlimited" but is it really unlimited? No intention of hijacking thread.

I am almost certain it has to do with push applications.
I just updated my 2g to 3.0.1
there was an ap in cydia that had to do with leaving my push on cause the 2g doesnt support it...
anyhow with this ap my battery drains like madness....
nedless to say i erased it.
battery back to normal.
yea... forget what i posted before... im starting to think the 3gs is just a big pile of crap. my new phone is totally locking up. it has no bearing on the battery problem. it just goes to show you really cant buy the first version of anything when it comes to technology.
but i did verify that billminder was the problem. i forgot to update it when i got my new phone and in standby the battery drained almost completely while i slept for 7 hrs.
i updated billminder this morning and my battery life is back to normal.
**Edit** i just thought of something too... i restored the back up of my last phone to my new one so all the push notifications were turned off and billminder still drained a full battery to less then 10% in 7 hrs. just goes to show that despite what apple claims these apps have the capability to run some kind of process in the background when they are not active or the app is still having information pushed to ur phone despite having the notifications turned off...
The only smartphone that I have had that had a longer battery life than my iPhone ws the BlackBerry 8330. That phone lasted about a day and a half with moderate use. Which for me is probably more than a lot of others. I get about a day of use from my iPhone. I do remember that the BlackBerry curve was rated the highest among smartphones in battery life if I'm not mistaken. So if my iPhone keeps up with the curve which doesn't have the functionality of my iPhone, then I would say it is doing pretty well. But I see that there are other opinions. What is considered good battery life?
well i have had a 3g and 3 different 3gs iphones now and my newest 3gs has damn good battery life for a PDA.
i lost my cord saturday night and it was fully charged at around 5 or 6pm... my phone got down to 20% at around 10am on monday morning... so that is basically 2 days of regular use.
i made a ton of calls (which drains my battery the most) and spent a lot of time on the web.
if this phone works well i will be extremely happy with my purchase.
Yes... making receiving phone calls use the battery faster than anything else I do on the phone.
If you are getting a day, then to me, that is considered good battery life. As long as my phone lasts from when I wake up to when I go to sleep and put it on the charger, I'll be happy.
On 3.1 I'll get way less than a day. I charge my phone every night and I don't
do much talking on the phone. I'll probably take the phone off the charger at
about 9am and be at 30% battery by about 3 or 4 PM. SMS and app usage
pretty much. Not that very many calls. Just something I live with. I got a
charger at work and a car charger so I'm fine.
either your battery is defective or one of your apps is draining it. either way your battery should last a helluva lot longer than that.
an easy way to figure it out is to *first back up your phone* and then erase and set it up as a new phone... run it for a few days with no apps... if your battery life dramatically increases than you know its an app and should start putting them back on one at a time.
if ur battery life is the same... return it... battery issues are very common with iphones...especially the new 3gs phones...
edit* i have started renaming the phones for the backup file that way they dont get over written or it just makes it easier to tell which is which...
