It's going to be released June 19th.
I'm not sure how much it will cost to upgrade if you're already an iPhone user and you're not due for an upgrade. I've heard rumors stating that if you're a current iPhone user you're able to upgrade for the 2 year contract price, but I'm not sure if this is correct.

Edit: I just tried pre-ordering one online from my account that has the iPhone 3G currently on it (which isn't due for an upgrade until 11/15/09) and because of the amount I pay per line per month, I get 2 year prices for 1 year contracts, but since I'm not due yet, they're letting me upgrade for a discounted price, but not the full discounted price. If I wanted a 16GB it would be $399 instead of $299. The $399 isn't full retail.
Depending on how much you pay for the line, regardless if you're a current iPhone user, you might have to pay full retail for the phone.

Umm...wow. My roommate's interested in upgrading, but it looks like he'll just make do with the 3.0 software instead.

AT&T is letting my friend just swap his current 16 gig for the iPhone 3GS when it comes out. He went to the store today and they are going to do it free of charge. It is ONLY because when the iPhone 3GS drops on June 19th, he still wouldn't have had his iPhone for 30 days.

If you aren't eligible for an upgrade, you will not be able to get the $199/$299 for the 3G(S). It will run you $399/$499, 16gb/32gb, respectively.

Unlike last year, you will not get the eligibility just because you have a 3G. This was done last year because owners of the 2G did not pay the subsidized price. With the 3G, that was a subsidized price.

I am curious to see what the numbers are like when it comes out. No MMS and the speeds wont increase for awhile. I want to get it anyways but does anyone see these things being an issue?

I'm not eligible for a upgrade until the august 2nd. so you're saying i only have to pay 199 or 299 then (aug. 2nd)

so here is my situation; i preordered one through work, but now i need to do it for my family plan. We have 4 lines and are all eligible for upgrade so i was going to upgrade us all to Iphone 3gs but a) i don't see the family plan for iphone option they talked about in the at&t press release and b) it won't let me preorder more than one iPhone!! Aghhh!!
