After my 6th Tour crapped out on me(headphone jack went bad), I'm taking the plunge and getting a HTC Hero from Sprint. What should I get(apps) when I start using it? Any tips that might be helpful for me?

I strongly suggest you get Ringdroid. It's perfect for customize ring tones.

If you're use to the different sound Profiles on a BB, I highly recommend Quick Profiles.

Screebl Lite is a superb! Very simple way to put the phone to sleep based on the accelorometer. It's a MUST have.

Newsrob is nice if you use Google Reader

Finally, head over to AndroLib, Find all applications and games available in the Android Market for your Android Phone, HTC Dream, HTC Magic etc... on your computer. You can see all the apps in the Market. Just fire-up Barcode Scanner on your Hero, scan the QR Code (barcode) on your computer screen and you'll be taken to the app in the Market.
