Go to the android market place from your phone and search wallpapers/themes. There are several free apps in there.

You do need a home replacement first before you can download free themes....pandahome is a free one and I know works with Eris. There is also openhome and freshface but those are both paid. I'd say try panda home first its free and is compatable with most themes just to see how you like it. =)
