It will cost me roughly �4 to �5 per month to get the Desire as opposed to the Wildfire, is the difference worth paying for?

The Wildfire IIRC is pretty low on the todem pole. Desire S is actually a higher spec'd phone and will have the better overall Android experience.
I guess it really comes down to your needs. Desire will have more memory, better processing power and even the hardware looks much better.
If it was me, I would go desire. Honestly I would see what the newest device is unless on a budget.

The Desire S is mid-range phone in the grand scheme of things - but it has much better specs than the Wildfire S. Engadget has a nice review on the Desire S.
