That's what Apple hopes Google will do. But there's no way Google is going to abandon Android, no matter what its plans are for Chrome OS.
Since when is apple insider a reliable source

Abandon an OS that has majority market share? Highly unlikely to say the least!

Maybe Android is just getting to boring, since there are so many Android phones on the market. I heard Samsung could be possibly ditching Android for there own OS. I believe you might find Android will become the OS of the low-end market.
Boring definitely doesn't motivate company to forgo billions in revenues from that boring product. And Samsung won't 'ditch' android anytime soon. They will however continue to diversify.

I have read this many times before but I believe the main reason would be they will need a better OS for the Internet of Things.
Google Likely to Replace Android with Chrome - Baltimore Technology | Examiner.com
Agreed - its more likely that android and chrome will combine to form a new os.
Whether the name changes, that's a whole other issue.

But Samsung is developing their own software called Tizen which I heard wouldn't have any Android support.

replace, no, evolve, yes
tizen runs android apps and just because they are making another OS doesnt mean they are replacing android. They already have their own OS in bada too.
Exactly.
And seeing as it's samsung - well they make everything for everyone. They can afford to diversify.

Lol Clickbait article to the fullest. A complete pipedream.

Yes, it is my bet that they will eventually move to a chrome OS phone for the primary reason of security and control of the base OS. Android is a cesspool and a security nightmare in it's raw/base form. Google has the resources, both $$ and engineering assets to build this in parallel with current Android development.
Why, because they want the other 20% of sales they don't already have? Silliness. Remember all the comments here about Android and iOS users bored with their devices. How's that working out so far - did you see the 2 largest selling devices for Tmob yesterday?
Android's is further along the "mobile computing" path than their competitors. I don't see Google abandoning that any time soon.
They made two OSs.
They're about as reliable for Android news and Crackberry is for Apple news, ie. not at all :D
its been a long standing idea on googles part to merge chrome os and android in to one OS, witch would essentially make a mobile computing OS given Chrome is in the cloud
Chrome is a browser. Android is an OS.
Chrome is also an OS.
Chromium OS - The Chromium Projects
Chrome is an os - as seen on the pixel, chromebooks etc.
It makes sense that chrome is a testbed for a feature rich os - and said features could then be incorporated into android; or else the two merge. Whether that offspring is called android, chrome or something else, well that's a whole other issue.
Both respective brands are hugely strong. Both aren't going anywhere.

I'm willing to bet it all that we will see a chrome platted android sometime in the future.
More likely to happen, Chrome OS and Android will evolve into one OS from Google. Just as iOS and OSX will evolve into one OS, once the hardware performance vs battery life technology reaches the practical point for this to occur.
This could be a break for the other players in the market, again, I doubt this is happening tomorrow! But it sure makes a lot of sense to me from Google's perspective, they probably want some control back, this also could halt fragmentation!

When Microsoft gets a licensing fee of +/- $8.00 per device, there is strong motivation to either create your own (Samsung) or transition to a new one in the future (Google).
Microsoft’s Android licensing agreements could earn it $8.8B by 2017 | BGR
