I am not having good luck with my Droid X as a hotspot. It stops constantly, requiring me to shut off the hotspot, (which usually results in a forced reboot).

The longest I have had it run is about 5 minutes. I am connecting with my Ipod Touch and my laptop.

    Any suggestions?

I am using the built in 3G hotspot app.

    Are there other choices?

Root, root, root for your Droid X. If you don't root, you'll miss out, for it's one, two, three strikes, You're out of the old ball game!

It's where ever the Human Torch touches you.

It's allowing wi-fi enabled devices to connect to the interwebs by using your phone as the medium to do it.

I would investigate further. I know a few people using the native hotspot asp, and the AD HOCK rooted one. They both work when running just fine. At 10 minutes of zero use, mine disconnects for security, but the ad hock wont I believe. Sounds like a defect hardware wise possibly, warranting a new phone. Ad hock has an ability to adjust because of the framework and may bandaid the original problem.

Oh, I see. So it's something you want because you want to use wi-fi on a laptop, right?

That sounds great and all... but aren't there risks to rooting? Like getting bricked? How often does that happen?

As long as you follow the procedures diligently, it shouldn't be a problem

Should be real easy. Take a look at tethering programs as well.
Some only do ad hoc tethering, which not all devices will connect to an ad hoc connection
