Traces reveal that the new beta Contacts app throws an illegal argument exception upon launch on some devices (Samsung). The app is trying to read a database field that isn't available.

BlackBerry should to fix that, together with the quirky Keyboard.

How about reverting the contacts apps in Manager to the last version that worked until BlackBerry fixes it?

The apps in BlackBerry Manager are directly fetched from Play Store. They are not downloaded from the repository. That's why you are receiving updates exactly at the same time as the BlackBerry devices.

If you are subscribed to the BlackBerry beta channel, BlackBerry Manager always fetches the latest betas. I can't influence that.

    Options are:
    1) install a working backup copy of the Contacts app or
    2) unsubscribe from the beta channel

I updated the Readme on Github with more details about the Contacts permission and why it is needed. Visit the Github page and click "Learn more" to read.

I have contacts app from the Play Store with monthly subscription. I think it's Beta. FYI - it won't open. I had to uninstall it on my S8+ as I get notices that it is draining battery. So, it's not just BlackBerry Manager. Just thought you would like to know 😁

Thanks. The Github change was not about the Contacts app though.

I just updated the info because of some feedback I received regarding the permissions that BlackBerry Manager is asking for. I hope that I could clarify that now.

The repo is the repository in BlackBerry Manager. Slide from left to right and choose Repository. There you will find apps that are not available in BlackBerry Manager (i.e. beta versions).

Is there any way to force the BB Contacts app to be the default app for contacts?
    I'm on a Sumsung S7, on Verizon, 7.0.
When I am in the phone screen reviewing my previous call history, when I select 'details' on a call from history, and then try to select 'create contact' or 'update existing', it gives me the Samsung native contact app, not the BB Contact app.

When I go into the Phone's Settings > Apps > Default Apps, it does show the Samsung 'contacts' app under the 'Calling app'.
Is there any way to change this?

    Thanks

I believe that this specific case always uses the built in contacts app. You can't change the setting.

You probably have to change the dialer too as this one is tight connected to the Samsungs contacts app
I tried to disable the Samsung contact app but then the dialer dissappeared too.
So I assume that both are somehow tight connected. Don't know if there is a real advantage to use the BlackBerry contacts app. Sprint on Note5
