I'm curious, if I were to use a vpn would apps use the vpn to access their home page, or not?

When using a browser the vpn is invoked, but what about an app, eg crackberry (or any other app)

I think everything (including app data) should go through the VPN.

In general if the vpn is an app then all data will go through the vpn.. Only time it shouldn't is if you used say opera with its built in vpn option

I think some people here are trying to use VPNs for privacy reasons.
They may want to do some research on device and browser fingerprinting. Basically, a determined website can tell that user A and user B are actually the same person, even if A logged on through a VPN one day, and B through different VPN the next.

Of course, this isn't a problem if your goal is just to stop other people on a public WiFi network from messing with your browsing.

I haven't tried that one myself. I've been using VPN Unlimited for a few years now.. If you watch technobuffalo (I think crackberry did this too if I'm not mistaken) you can get a lifetime membership for decent price during promotions
