And this is just data usage. I have left it on WiFi updating applications overnight. I've since restricted it's ability to update with out WiFi but jesus this phone does a lot of background work.

It's not just this phone. Every android phone with the playstore will behave like this.

I have less than 100mb on cell usage to the Playstore this month. New devices will always use alot of Playstore bandwidth which is why restricting it to wifi only is advised until you settle down on trying new apps etc.

The only significant data usage on my BlackBerry Priv has occurred overnight while listening to streaming radio station. After 8 hours the battery still had over 50% charge and data usage was approximately 500 MB. Since my wireless carrier cannot seem to provide close to real time update on data usage I cannot that 500 MB was all due to streaming radio.

Delete apps, or make sure it updates apps manually or by wifi only

Yeah that is about normal for Android phones. My HTC M8 has settled down to 22 MB this week. I think part of the issue is new apps, updates to apps, and things like that. It should settle down after a while.
