I have used ExpressVPN for number of years and run it 24/7 on my android phone. One feature that has been available on the desktop version for some time has been the ability that automatically blocks internet traffic when the connection to the VPN is not available or is reconnecting.

This feature is now available within the android app.

From the list of version update features:

"Added “network protection” feature that blocks internet traffic when the app is unable to connect or reconnect to the VPN (on by default and configurable in the Settings menu)."

So network lock / internet killswitch. Kinda surprised they never had that in there already if it's new.
