I used to use ES File Explorer, but changed to FX File after learning about the spyware in ES. FX doesn't look as good as ES, but I prefer my privacy.

I like FX too. And Cabinet. Anything that sticks to the Material Design theme.

It's just a little scary giving permissions to file managers.

This is an unfounded claim. There is no evidence that ES File Ex. has spyware on it. Yes, I even searched my own device for the "Baidu" folder. This is pure non-sense!

Total Commander if you want to a dual pane interface. Don't like ES Explorer new design scheme. Its become pretty and forsakes utility.

I believe thats due to an eXFAT driver issue affecting some users for which BB will need to update their app.

ES File Explorer with classic themes love the handy features but you really need to deny some permissions
Total Commander the best file manager for Windows now on android what more can you say
Root Explorer for changing my boot screen animation

you can set it up over any connection for some while others are tied to the network you are sharing. BB10 required link to be installed for remote file management so many other android solutions would also need something installed.

I understand that... but... I've looked at a bunch and haven't found any that will connect to a home network over the internet. I have found a lot that will on the same network or that require an FTP server to be setup.

Can someone be more specific as to which ones can? FTP also isn't really a solution due to network structure. I'd like to point to a number of directories on a home network (PCs, NAS, etc mapped through a central PC) and be done with it.

I have downloaded and currently use Software Data Cable at the play store. This transfer files from my PC to my android via FTP over my home's Wi-Fi system. Of course it would make it easier for your PC if you also installed a Windows FTP app to make navigation easier.
