Default Wifi icon lighting up but not working

hey guys, slight problem...

ive just moved to the united states from England and my wifi has stopped working.
i only wanted to use my BB for bbm and facebook app using WIFI as i still have my UK sim card in, and Wifi would be free.
when i find a wireless router and link up to it it says connected, the wifi symbol lights up, but bbm does not connect and fb app gives me a error (100) code and will not load up.
im sure there shouldn't be a problem with it just because im in a different country as im only using wifi.

any help would be much appreciated,

Thanks
