Default Wifi with deactivated BB. Is it possible?

I was given a friend's old BB Bold 9000 just for playing around with. She had it on AT&T but got a new one and basically thought I might enjoy messing around with the old one. Which I have, but I was wondering if there was any way to get the wi-fi up and running without activating the phone again. After days looking through forums I've seen alot of people saying that it IS possible, but I've tried everything. Battery pulls, setting the browser to hotspot, among a million other things. It connects to my router perfectly (I have an older Netgear MR814V2) but everytime I try the browser it says "Unable to find requested server" Worth noting is that there is also no entry in my Host routing table and obviously I can't register since I have no service. Is there any way to get it up and running or am I just wifi-less?

You won't be able to get it to work. You need service and a BB data plan for browsing the internet, even on WiFi.
