If you keep your BIS sim card in but end your contract with your provider and therefore end your BIS data plan, if the provider does not deregister your PIN and keeps it locked to that, will the apps work over wifi only?

I am not sure what happens once you end your mobile contract but keep the unused sim in OR end your blackberry data plan but they do not deregister the account or PIN, I assume you will no longer have a BIS connection but will apps which need your PIN still work over wifi?

I've read that people who used to have bis but don't anymore, their apps still work. If anyone can verify this, please do so!
Alternatively, if you use tmobile and have the blackberry feature enabler grandfathered in, mms and I'm apps will work. Not sure about the browser and facebook

LinkedIn has worked with Wi-Fi from release date. It was actually a problem, since it was Wi-FI, BES or TCP. It didn't support BIS (How funny/stupid is that)...

Once you get BBM working (meaning you have BIS and it is working) you can shut down the carrier network and BBM will still work. I've done it plenty of times (and I must say it surprised me when it 1st did).

WORKING WITH WI-FI
Push Email (same as BBM, if it works with BIS, will work on Wi-FI)
WordPress for BlackBerry
Twitter for BlackBerry
SmrtGuard
Upvise
PayPal

NOT-WORKING
Kindle
SugarSync (and I hate them for this)

Yeah thats what I'm trying to say. If you have a working BIS, BBM will work over wifi, because the PIN is registered. I don't have a BIS plan, so my PIN is not registered and BBM and Facebook will NOT work.

Are you on a Blackberry plan or a generic plan? If the latter, then email will not work. But you said that BBM and Facebook is working fine, then you probably are. Contact your service provider, they will help you set it up for you.

Carriers are moving to something like this, not all of them, but some already have this layout:

BIS: Full thing - 10 Emails, internet browsing, BBM, all apps.

BIS light - 10 Emails, IM apps.

BIS Social - IM apps, Social apps (Twitter/Facebook/etc).

BIS Email - 1 Email (@carrier.blackberry.com), BBM

And a few other variations. Make sure you know which one are you paying for before you call, it might be so you are not entitled for email as it is.

As you can see, not all plans offer email.

You could find some app for it, but since you'll only be able to use over Wi-Fi, I don't see reason for it. Getting to the mobile webmail would do wouldn't it?

^^ Carriers over here don't specify things clearly, so people always get charged for no reason Check your plan before you use anything data.
----
Just tested Twitter(official) for Blackberry and sadly it doesn't work. I read the online manual and one of the requirements was a "wireless data plan with internet access" which means it needs BIS/BES or data plan

And I just tested and it worked.

Guess we better move it to the same group of apps that work over Wi-Fi IF you already have BIS running.

No I don't get email with mine! They try to talk me into paying $10 extra to have it but is not important to me really.

Good idea. Many apps work with wifi if you have BIS. Sadly, I do not have BIS so I will be unable to test them.

To be honest, push email is the flagship function of the blackberrys. If you just use it for IM and Facebook, maybe a messaging phone may be more suitable. For example, the Motorola Cliq has an amazing interface suited for social networkers. And it has a spacious slideout keyboard. Just saying, I'm kinda being a hypocrite because I have a blackberry but don't have a blackberry plan
